So Dick Cheney shoots a man, and then that man apologizes for all the
trouble his getting shot has caused Cheney. Wow. Just...wow. I don't
like Cheney, in fact I think he's the worst member of the Bush
administration, which is the worst administration since Nixon's, but I
have to hand it to him for his mindboggling power.

I wish I could shoot someone and then get them to apologize to me about
it. What was the guy afraid of? Cheney might shoot him again?

I'd rather hunt with Dick Cheney than ride in a car with Ted Kennedy!

You don't have to worry about Ted Kennedy unless a) he is driving and
b) you're near water.

People do realize that hunting accidents happen all the time, right?
This is just another one... no big deal. Except to the media, for some
reason...

Remind me to never to go hunting, then. If, on a hunting trip, you
were to shoot me, or I were to shoot you, I would regard either as a
Big Deal, and I hope you would feel the same. However, a major tragedy
for you or me would probably not be "news" because we are not public
figures.

Cheney, however, is Vice-President, and could become president if, for
instance, George Bush were to go on a hunting trip with someone like
yourself. That makes Cheney important, and makes what happens to him,
and what he does, news.

But what Aaron found remarkable was not the fact that a hunting
accident occurred, but that the shooting victim apologized to the man
who shot him. I agree, that is, by normal standards, pretty bizarre.

Yup - we are inbetween bopth movies and books and are running out of
crazy impossible ideas for what will happen next. So - someone decided
to point out that Riddle went on a hunting trip and shot a death eater -
who apologized for getting in the way of Riddle's bullets = or something
like that!

With a *bullet*, maybe. But they were hunting with *shot*. It's half a
step up from a BB pellet. The only real difference is that a BB almost
never penetrates skin, while shot much more often does.

He didn't apologize for *getting shot*, he apologized to Cheney for all
the media attention. Which isn't his fault, but whatever.

It's a big deal any way you slice it, Aaron. He admitted that he shot
too low, and what if the poor guy had taken shot directly in his face
and eyes? I presume he would then be blinded. Not a big deal?

Aaron, when I talk to you, sometimes I feel like I'm just talking to
myself. =)

That's what I said, and the other poster didn't say the apology was for
"being shot" either. He apologized for all the trouble his getting shot
caused Cheney. I do not see how this is any better than just
apologizing for getting shot in the first place. It's ridiculous,
Aaron.

> Which isn't his fault, but whatever.

No, not "whatever." That's exactly the point. He didn't do anything
wrong, and he didn't alert the media. He shouldn't be apologizing for
anything. At best, he did need to say that he "regrets" the media
attention this has caused, but he shouldn't *apologize* for a damn
thing.

That would be a good excuse for posting it in the Harry Potter ng, but
he was asking about the 24 ng. I posted to the ngs that I frequent.

Again, to all ngs involved, I apologize that there was no indication
this thread was off-topic in the title. Somehow, Google clipped the

Seems smart, to me. He said the *exact* words that needed to be said to get the
press to leave him alone and for the story to die. It's likely that he had
professional help in crafting his message as it was perfect and effective.

*Why* he wanted the story to die is obvious. He's a private citizen who doesn't
want all the fuss and bother. He is old, he is rich, and he doesn't need it.

After the first day, the real story wasn't the accident itself, but the media
hoopla and the exposition of the differences in psychology between republicans
and democrats.

If the democrats were more like republicans, they would have kept quiet about
the accident while ordering one of their think tanks to explore whether the
millions spent on advertising to increase the democratic vote count could be
better spent on getting more republicans to go hunting. As it was, their
reaction only reinforced the 'womanly handwringer' image put forth by Ann
Coulter.

He may indeed have said words that made the story die quickly, but I
don't see how apologizing to the VP necessary at all, and I certainly
don't see that the VP deserves an apology. Can you explain that part of
your argument?

Of course.

I didn't like how anyone handled it. Frankly, I didn't give a shit
(other than the chuckle factor) about Cheney shooting someone while
hunting. It happens. Move on. I only got truly interested when the guy
who was SHOT apologized to the VP. Even then, it was more curiousity
than serious interest.

I didn't like their reaction, but I didn't like Cheney's and Bush's
reaction either. It's all calculated. There's no sincerity left in
government.

Isn't it interesting that every time facts are stated which make a

I don't think so. The police closed the investigation the day of the
accident, and there's been no mention of a fine.

Here, why don't you stand still and get shot with buckshot and then see
if you have that same opinion. Furthermore, as has already been
pointed out, the man could easily have lost an eye (or both eyes),
suffered permanent hearing loss if he'd gotten hit in the ear, etc.

Cheney violated any number of firearms safety rules, even discounting
rumors he'd been drinking. And I say this as someone who owns a couple
of firearms myself. Don't be such a fucking apologist for Cheney's
stupidity.

Buckshot would have taken his face off.

If he was completely sincere in his statements to the press then nobody who
wasn't there and knows him personally can explain it. He simply felt that Cheney
deserved it, and that's that. On the other hand, if his apology wasn't sincere
then my guess would be that it was necessary to get the press off his back
(which I further assume is why he spoke to the press in the first place). If
that is what he was doing, his apology was brilliant in as much as it made the
press the bad guy (which is the best and surest way to get them to go away). In
saying this, I don't claim to know if his apology was sincere or not.

Fair enough. I am curious why you and others discussing this tend to emphasize
the word, "shot". It's never, 'the VP shot someone' its always, 'the VP *SHOT*
someone (pant pant) as if that is a peculiarly heinous way to hurt someone.
Getting shot hurts, it can maim you or even kill you, but so can a lot of other
things. If it was an accident, then it shouldn't matter so much that the
accident involved a gun as opposed to a car.

You're wrong about that, at least partly. For example, they have sincerely not
raised my taxes in five years and they sincerely hope that the debt will force
privatization of social security and other programs in the future. But when it
comes to the press I see what you mean.

If you want a post to stay in the thread in all news readers don't
change the title. All three of your standard answers are a
